Topical Magnesium for Pain – Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a neurologic health condition that causes widespread pain and tenderness (sensitivity to touch) that tends to come and go, moving about the body with little to no rhyme or reason. Most people with this chronic illness feel constantly fatigued and tend to have trouble getting a good night’s rest.

Fibromyalgia is most commonly reported in women, though it can occasionally occur in men. The common treatments for fibromyalgia are actually not quite treatments at all, but rather ways to mask the symptoms. There is strong evidence and proof that there are better ways to manage and even prevent symptoms of this disruptive condition that are more natural and conducive to improved health and healthy aging.

In fact, studies done in recent years have shown low levels of cellular magnesium in people with fibromyalgia and have uncovered a clear link between low magnesium levels and fibromyalgia symptoms. (2)

Raising cellular levels of magnesium may not be as simple as just taking an over the counter magnesium supplement. In adults with healthy magnesium levels, our bodies are able to prevent these pain responses, in turn preventing pain felt – especially in the case of those suffering from fibromyalgia. Given the determining role that NMDA receptors play in how we experience pain, magnesium has been studied in connection with an array of pain conditions.

Treating conditions with magnesium not only reportedly helped to alleviate symptoms of fibromyalgia, but also eased headaches and migraine attacks.

While it is clear that magnesium plays an important role in pain management, experts continue to work around the clock to more clearly comprehend just how it functions within the body while uncovering other  and further clinical studies are
needed to understand its role in pain management. (3)
